The Tigres UANL of Mexican soccer reported this Tuesday that the Argentine Guido Pizarro decided to leave his position as head coach of the team just days before playing the third matchday of the Apertura tournament.

“We inform the fans that today Guido Pizarro made the decision to leave the position of head coach of Club Tigres for personal reasons. We thank Guido for his time with the team and we will announce the new coaching staff that will take responsibility for the team later,” the institution reported through a message on social media.

Pizarro, 36, played for the felines in two stints, the first between 2013 and 2017 and the second from 2018 to 2025.

Upon retiring from the pitch, in the middle of last year, he immediately became the coach of the team, which he led to the final of the Mexican league in his first tournament, where they lost to Toluca.

After Tigres announced the strategist's departure, Pizarro published a letter in which he said goodbye to the institution with which he won four league titles during his time as a player.

“After 13 years in this institution, as a player and as a head coach, I have made the decision to step aside. I thank Tigres and all the people who work to make this club function and grow. To the incomparable fans, thank you for the support and affection toward me and my family during these thirteen years,” the strategist wrote.

Pizarro clarified that his departure is not due to the results obtained in the Apertura, in which he lost 3-1 to Tijuana on the first matchday and drew 2-2 with San Luis on the second.

“I want to make it clear that it is not a decision motivated by the results, but the consequence of a process of conversations and reflection held over time,” he stressed.

The coach did not mention as a cause for his resignation the lack of reinforcements, added to the departure of Ángel Correa, World Champion with Argentina, who emigrated to River Plate last week.

Tigres reported that for their third matchday game where they will visit Querétaro next Saturday, Hernán Elizondo, the U-21 coach, will assume the head coach position on an interim basis.
