Canelo Álvarez is trending on social media, not because of his next fight, but for his support for the Mexican National Team. Prior to the match on Saturday, October 3rd between Mexico and the United States, the boxer from Guadalajara placed a large bet in favor of Rafa Márquez's team.
However, the bet did not turn out as he expected, as 'El Tri' lost 3-0 to the Stars and Stripes squad.
How much was his bet and how did social media react to knowing how much Canelo had lost? We tell you here.
How much money did Canelo Álvarez lose after betting on Mexico?
'Canelo' allegedly lost $7,182.72 dollars, equivalent to more than $130,000 Mexican pesos, after betting them in favor of Mexico on the Kalshi platform.
“Mexico wins today!”, wrote the Mexican boxer when sharing his bet.
If Rafa Márquez's National Team had won, Canelo could have taken home $19,458 dollars, equivalent to more than $353,000 Mexican pesos.
This is how social media reacted to Canelo's bet
On social media, internet users mocked Canelo Álvarez's bet. One user pointed out that he shouldn't bet with his heart, while another considered that the fighter from Guadalajara should stick to boxing instead of placing bets.
Another internet user considered that Canelo's bet had “cursed” Rafa Márquez's team.
Here are some of the highlighted comments:
- “No se apuesta con el corazón”
- “Mejor sigue boxeando mi canelo...”
- “Malo para el box y malo para las apuestas!!”
- “Dedícate al Box, en las apuestas eres muy malo”
- “No mames canelo, mejor regálamelos”
- “No me los sales, cabrón”
Canelo's other bets in favor of the Mexican National Team
This is not the first time that Canelo has shared his bets in favor of 'El Tri'. Previously, he had done so in other important matches for the National Team, such as in the 2026 World Cup.
In the Mexico vs. South Korea match, Canelo bet $100,000 dollars, equivalent to $1.8 million Mexican pesos, also on the Kalshi platform, with the hope of doubling the figure.
According to the image shared by Canelo, after the Mexican National Team's 1-0 win against South Korea, the boxer could have taken home $208,000 dollars, equivalent to $3.78 million pesos.
When is Canelo Álvarez's next fight?
Beyond the bets, Canelo has his sights set on his next fight against the Frenchman Christian Mbilli, scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026.
The fight for the WBC super middleweight World Championship will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
