The Government of Mexico, through the Attorney General's Office (FGR), opened an investigation into organized crime following the explosion on Saturday of a car in front of the facilities of the Community Police in the municipality of Coahuayana, Michoacan, on the Pacific coast, which left five dead and 12 injured.
In a statement, the FGR specified that, in coordination with the Mexican Government's Security Cabinet and the state authorities of Michoacan (west), they are carrying out procedures regarding the investigation initiated after the events.
“At the scene are 15 experts from the Federal Forensic Center (CFPF) and 11 federal ministerial police officers, both from the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) of the FGR, specialized in field forensics, photography, medicine, genetics, and forensic lophoscopy,” the agency specified.
Likewise, there are experts in telecommunications, land traffic, engineering and architecture, fires and explosives, chemistry, and forensic ballistics.
It reiterated that, following the “regrettable events,” five people lost their lives, and there are 12 injured.
On Saturday, the Prosecutor's Office informed EFE that the vehicle explosion occurred around 11:40 local time (17:40 GMT), on Ignacio Lopez Rayon street, in front of the Community Police base.
It noted that two of the fatalities were men traveling in the wrecked car, while the other three were members of the Community Police.
The Community Police is led by Hector Zepeda Navarrete, alias El Comandante Teto, identified as a former member of the civilian self-defense groups that emerged in 2014 to fight the then-hegemonic drug trafficking cartel that called itself Los Caballeros Templarios.
The Government of Michoacan has Civil Guard (State Police) groups in Coahuayana that operate in coordination with the National Guard, the Mexican Army, and the Navy.
Michoacan has 270 kilometers of coastline on the Mexican Pacific, distributed in the municipalities of Lazaro Cardenas, Aquila, and Coahuayana, where the Secretariat of the Navy maintains constant operations on the high seas as it is a route for cocaine trafficking from South America.
Authorities have identified that residents of the Michoacan coast work in the service of drug traffickers by collecting packages of cocaine from the sea, which they subsequently transport by land or in light aircraft to different points in Mexico or the border with the United States.
The Secretariat of the Navy identified that on the coast of Michoacan there is a strong confrontation between the Community Police of Aquila and Coahuayana and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) over the control of drug trafficking routes.
Since November 10, Mexico has reinforced security in Michoacan following the assassination of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, who was attacked during a public event in the middle of the Day of the Dead.
