United States President Donald Trump asserted this Thursday that "a lot of things are happening" in the negotiations that Washington is promoting between Kyiv and Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.

"We will see how it turns out. A lot of things have been happening," Trump responded to the press at the White House when asked about statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who asserted that Russian leader Vladimir Putin does not want peace.

Steve Witkoff, the White House special envoy, held a new round of contacts this week to end the conflict, one of Trump's main campaign promises that remains unfulfilled.

On Tuesday, Witkoff met with Zelenskyy and European leaders in Oslo and later traveled to Russia to meet with Putin in Saint Petersburg, where the release of an American teacher detained in that country was also announced.

On Wednesday, Zelenskyy showed willingness to "freeze" the current front lines, which would leave part of Ukrainian territory under Moscow's control, while Putin opened the door this Thursday to "reaching an agreement" with Ukraine.

This new round of contacts comes after Trump eased sanctions on Russia to allow the export of Russian diesel and as he prepares for a possible summit with Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to address the war in Ukraine without Zelenskyy's presence.
