A tragedy occurred in southern Thailand after lightning struck a soccer field during a match played on August 4. The incident caused the death of a 24-year-old player and left 12 other people injured.
According to CNA, the event occurred around 5:30 p.m. (local time) in the city of Sungai Golok, during a match corresponding to the semifinals of the Golok FA Cup, played at the Santiphap stadium between the SAMCOLTS and Abu x Nong Sirin teams.
Various local media outlets noted that the match was taking place during a monsoon storm, characterized by heavy rains, electrical activity, strong wind gusts, and flood risks.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Sofwan Awae, who played as a winger for Yala FC, a team in the third division of Thailand that he had recently joined.
In videos circulated on social media, the moment lightning strikes near the players on the field can be seen. After the impact, Sofwan was rendered unconscious while his teammates tried to help him.
Authorities reported that emergency teams did everything possible to save his life; however, the injuries he sustained were fatal.
"Although the emergency medical team did everything possible to save him, the victim passed away due to the serious injuries sustained in the incident," declared Thun Sirikhunt, police chief of Sungai Golok.

Yala FC expressed its condolences to the soccer player's family through a statement.
"The association joins in mourning this loss and expresses its condolences to the family, those involved, and the football club during this moment of grief."
Authorities also reported that the 12 other injured people were transported to Sungai Golok Hospital to receive medical care.
Among the injured is Mohammad Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli, a 22-year-old Malaysian soccer player.
