Ben Affleck came to the defense of Digger, the film by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, which has faced mixed reviews and poor box office performance. The "Animals" actor questioned why the public celebrates its commercial failure and warned that punishing risky films can harm Hollywood's creativity.
The controversy surrounding Digger, the film starring Tom Cruise and directed by the Mexican Alejandro González Iñárritu, has added a new voice: Ben Affleck. The actor and filmmaker defended the cinematic proposal and criticized those who seem to enjoy that the production did not achieve the expected economic results.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Affleck described the film as an ambitious and interesting proposal, made by talented people. He also compared the reaction of some viewers to a form of bullying, considering that the film's commercial stumble has become a reason for celebration.
"It's a bit like high school bullying, with people who hadn't even seen the movies. Frankly, we're seeing it right now with 'Digger' (...) everyone wants to celebrate this failure as if it's the most exciting thing that's ever happened. And you think: it's a pretty ambitious and interesting movie, made by interesting and talented people," indicated Affleck.
In the same way, he warned about the consequences that this attitude can have for the film industry: "Everyone wants to count the money, the losses or whatever. In my opinion, if you punish movies that take risks, guess what you're going to get? A bunch of mediocre and unoriginal movies (...) you can't do anything interesting without taking risks. And that means sometimes you're going to fall flat," he asserted.
