Bad news for Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu! Digger has been dealt a heavy blow as it was reported that its theatrical presence was drastically reduced after earning well below expectations. Its current performance threatens to turn it into one of Hollywood's biggest financial failures of 2026.
Tom Cruise faces one of the biggest commercial stumbles of his career with Digger, his new film directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. A few weeks after its release, the film lost thousands of screens, according to the outlet Movieweb.
"According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, Digger is pulling out of 2,535 theaters this weekend, a drop from the 3,321 in which it was released just two weeks ago. This represents the tenth largest screen drop in a single weekend ever recorded, placing the film alongside such well-known hits as The Rhythm Section, Cry Macho, and The Many Saints of Newark," he posted.
The decline represents a major setback for a production that brought together a Hollywood star and one of the most internationally recognized Mexican directors.
How much money has Tom Cruise's Digger grossed?
During its opening weekend, the film grossed around $8 million in the United States and Canada. In its second weekend, revenue fell 60% to approximately $3.2 million in that same market. By its third week, the reduction in the number of theaters further limited its chances of recovery.
Why did Digger flop at the box office?
Industry experts and analysts have commented that the film's poor performance can be explained by several factors, mainly because Digger is a different proposition from Tom Cruise's usual hits. Instead of betting on an action film, the actor starred in a satire about power and climate change.
What is Tom Cruise's film Digger about?
Tom Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon whose decisions trigger an environmental catastrophe of massive proportions. The story uses humor and exaggeration to explore the consequences of human actions on the planet.
The film was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Oscar winner for Birdman and The Revenant, and features a cast that includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Emma D'Arcy.
