The British government's Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, stated that the Premier League's decision to find Manchester City guilty of financial irregularities is an "incredibly serious" matter.
The politician spoke on Tuesday on the British network BBC hours after the Premier League confirmed the decision to find City guilty of 115 financial irregularities.
"It is an incredibly serious matter. The Premier League statement is very stark," said Nandy.
"Manchester City has the right to appeal. This is a very worrying matter for City fans and for all football fans," she added.
The English club was accused more than three years ago of 115 financial irregularities relating to the period between the 2008-2009 and 2017-2018 seasons.
"An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of the Premier League's financial rules over a nine-season period and most of the charges related to their failure to cooperate with the investigation," the Premier League announced in a statement issued this Tuesday.
According to the commission, Manchester City is guilty of carrying out adulterated contracts with certain companies to inflate their revenue and reduce their costs, of submitting inaccurate accounts and hiding their finances from football governing bodies, of breaching Premier League and UEFA financial limits, and of failing in their obligations to cooperate and act in good faith with the utmost loyalty toward the Premier League.
Now, it is up to the independent commission to determine the appropriate sanction for City, which could range from a financial fine to a points deduction, relegation, or expulsion from the league.
