Luis "Matador" Hernández, a former Mexican soccer player, received criticism on social media after comparing his four goals in the 1998 France World Cup with those scored by Julián Quiñones in the 2026 World Cup, where the Al-Qadsiah FC striker equaled his record.
During an interview with the media, the former Cruz Azul player admitted that surpassing World Cup records benefits the Mexican National Team. However, he highlighted that he achieved his four goals in three matches, while Quiñones needed four games.
"Any Mexican who surpasses the records we have had benefits the national team a lot. It’s just that there are parameters; I did it in a World Cup, he did too, but I did it in fewer games," he stated.
Social media criticizes Matador Hernández for comparing himself to Julián Quiñones
Luis Hernández's statements sparked criticism on social media, where some fans defended Julián Quiñones and highlighted the national and international titles he has won during his career.
Other users recalled the goal opportunity that El Matador missed against Germany during the round of 16 of the 1998 France World Cup, a match that Mexico lost 2-1.
Among the highlighted comments are:
What did Luis Hernández say about Raúl Jiménez's surgery?
During the same interview, reporters also asked Matador Hernández about the outlook for the Mexican National Team without Raúl Jiménez, who will undergo surgery this Friday, October 16, after suffering a knee injury.
This is the reason why Jiménez will miss the Tri's upcoming FIFA date.
"Raúl is not the entire national team. We shouldn't pigeonhole or give the responsibility of leading the attack to a single player; for that, there are several other forwards who can, as I say, get back to their level," he pointed out.
