Miguel "Piojo" Herrera, who managed the Mexican National Team from 2013 to 2015, expressed his confidence in Rafa Márquez's project during his appearance on the Fox Sports program La Última Palabra.
The current Atlante head coach stated that Márquez has a future at the helm of El Tri and highlighted his decision to call up young players for the FIFA date matches.
"Rafa (Márquez) has a lot of future, it is going to work. He dared to take a lot of kids to these matches (FIFA date)," he expressed.
Miguel Herrera defends Rafa Márquez after Mexico's defeat against the United States
El Piojo also defended the Mexican National Team's performance in the match against the United States, as he considered that El Tri dominated the pitch during the first few minutes of the game.
According to Herrera, the three goals Mexico conceded were the result of individual and collective team errors.
"Many talk about losing 3-0 to the United States, but Mexico was infinitely superior in the first 35 minutes. The three goals were individual mistakes, it wasn't a matter of work, of movement, of a poorly positioned team," he asserted.
However, the former El Tri coach did question Mexico's performance in the last match against Chile, as he felt there was a lack of unity among the players, as well as a lack of ability to react.
Despite this, Herrera noted that these matches will serve as a learning experience for Márquez and will allow him to discern which players to call up and which not to in future matches.
"The last match (against Chile) is the one I could question (Rafa on), the team didn't find itself on the field and there was no reaction, but these are the lessons he must learn so that when there are matches for points, he comes out with a very solid team. He surely saw who he will and will not take," he pointed out.
