The world of professional wrestling in Mexico is in mourning, and simultaneously in the midst of controversy, following the death of referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, "El Búho," during a match in Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo. What happened?

A video of his final minutes of life is circulating on during the match between Hijo del Fishman and Máscara Sagrada NG; El Búho was the referee in said fight when he died, allegedly as a result of the piledriver maneuver.

According to the video, Pineda was working in the ring when Hijo del Fishman grabbed him to perform said maneuver, which is illegal in several wrestling commissions due to how dangerous, and even fatal, it is.

El Búho was the victim of the piledriver after counting to three on the mat when Máscara Sagrada was pinned; from one moment to the next, Hijo del Fishman lifted him and applied the technique. In the video, the referee can be seen complaining of discomfort in his chest and then his hip as he rolls toward the edge of the ring.

Apparently, Gerardo Germán Pineda did not die the instant he was thrown onto the mat, although investigations are still ongoing by state authorities and the Public Prosecutor's Office, which was responsible for the arrest of Hijo de Fishman.

A statement issued by the company El Patrón Espectáculos Lucha Libre, which organized the event, indicated that the wrestler will receive legal support after being identified as the alleged culprit in the referee's death following the piledriver: "Our company is attentive to the development of the situation and has arranged for accompaniment and legal assistance for Hijo de Fishman, so that the corresponding process is carried out in accordance with the law and before the competent authorities."

What is known about the death of El Búho and the alleged culpability of Hijo de Fishman?

According to initial reports, Gerardo Germán Pineda died minutes after the piledriver applied by Hijo de Fishman, in the early hours of October 7 at the Centro Deportivo 11 de Julio.

After the technique was performed, the wrestling show was suspended because El Búho did not get up from the mat; the organization called emergency services, but the referee no longer had vital signs.

So far, the causes of the referee's death have not been clarified, nor has it been confirmed that it was a consequence of the piledriver.

Reports indicate that the suspect was placed at the disposal of the Attorney General's Office of the State of Hidalgo. Photographs of the wrestler in the midst of his arrest are circulating on social media, showing him smiling, in a casual and proud posture. It is not clear where they were taken from, although they are attributed to the Public Security authorities of Hidalgo; it should be noted that they are not visible on their official channels.
