One of the most important festivities in Mexico is approaching: the Day of the Dead. Because this celebration falls on Monday, November 2nd (All Souls' Day), thousands of workers are wondering if they will have to go to work that day or if they will be able to rest because it is a holiday. Here we tell you what will happen so you can organize your schedule.
The Day of the Dead is one of the celebrations that most excites Mexicans: the atmosphere surrounding this tradition and the offering that families place to remember their loved ones are the most representative aspects of a holiday that unites millions of people.
It is for this reason that thousands of workers hope to spend said festivity at home to remember their most beloved beings with their families. But is November 2nd a mandatory day of rest?
Is November 2nd, 2026, a workday in Mexico?
Yes. Monday, November 2nd, 2026, is an ordinary working day for those governed by the Federal Labor Law (LFT), since the Day of the Dead does not appear on the list of mandatory holidays in Article 74.
This means that companies are not legally obligated to suspend activities or grant a day off to their employees for the Day of the Dead celebration.
However, some companies may grant the day as a rest day by their own decision, through internal policies, or through agreements established in individual or collective contracts.
There are also government agencies that include November 2nd in their calendars of non-working days.
Should I be paid double or triple if I work on November 2nd?
No. Since November 2nd is not a mandatory day of rest established in the LFT, working on that date does not, by itself, generate the right to receive double or triple pay.
Is it mandatory for my company to give me November 2nd off?
No. The Federal Labor Law does not establish the Day of the Dead as a general mandatory day of rest. The company may grant it if its policies or labor agreements determine so.
Are there classes on November 2nd?
The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) establishes in its calendar the suspension of teaching duties for November 2nd, so there will be no classes that Monday, which means it will be a long weekend for millions of students.
What is the next mandatory day of rest after the Day of the Dead?
It will be Monday, November 16th, 2026, for the commemoration of the Mexican Revolution.
