For the first time, US citizens will be able to apply for a passport entirely digitally starting in 2027, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday.
The head of US diplomacy made the announcement after President Donald Trump launched the new website America.gov, a platform that uses artificial intelligence to bring together federal government services in one place.
"Starting next year, Americans will be able to apply for their first passport completely online," Rubio stated.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PROCESSING A US PASSPORT
The process can be carried out from a mobile phone: applicants will be able to enter their personal data, upload a photograph, pay the corresponding fee, and receive the document at their homes.
As Rubio explained, the new system will eliminate the need to print forms, request in-person appointments, wait in lines, or have photographs taken at establishments such as pharmacies.
The measure will also allow applicants to avoid paying intermediaries who currently handle these procedures on their behalf, the Secretary of State added.
The launch of this new website coincides with Trump's commitment not to hinder the development of artificial intelligence, even though industry leaders have called for regulation to ensure the safety of this technology.
