The Secretariat of the Interior and the Mexican Notariat have collaborated since 2003 to “promote a culture of wills in the country” during September, with the goal of “providing legal certainty and protecting people's right to receive an inheritance in a safe and orderly manner.”

What discounts are available in September, Month of the Will?
During the Month of the Will campaign, there will be a cost reduction of up to 50%. Additionally, some notary offices will extend their business hours, including service on Saturdays, and will offer free consultations.
If you are in Mexico City, the Mexico City College of Notaries reported that some notary offices will be open on weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They will also maintain the discount through October.
What documents do you need to make a will?
To make a will, you must be over 16 years old and in full use of your mental faculties, according to information from the Government of the State of Mexico.
In addition, you will need the following documents and information:
- Acta de nacimiento en copia.
- Identificación oficial en original y copia.
- Datos generales: nombre completo, fecha y lugar de nacimiento, nacionalidad, estado civil y régimen patrimonial, en caso de estar casado, ocupación y domicilio actual.
- Testigos, dependiendo de la notaría y del tipo de testamento.
What is a will and what can you inherit?
According to the Government of Mexico's website, a will is “a document through which a person decides the destination of their assets, rights, and obligations once they pass away.”
Among the elements you can include are:
- Bienes, como muebles e inmuebles.
- Derechos, como una marca registrada.
- Obligaciones, como créditos bancarios o hipotecarios. De acuerdo con el Gobierno de México, las deudas se cubren hasta donde los bienes del testador lo permitan.
What happens if you die without making a will?
If you pass away and did not leave a will, the law will determine who the heirs are and in what proportion, according to the Government of Mexico.
This process can take years and generate conflicts between people who believe they have the right to receive the assets.
Can you change or cancel your will later?
Yes. A will is “a revocable and modifiable act,” so you can change it as many times as you want.
If you have made several wills throughout your life, the last one will be the only valid one.
Where can you make your will in September 2026?
To make your will, you can go to the notary office closest to your home with the requested documents. Furthermore, the Government of Mexico states that you can do it in any federal entity, regardless of where your assets are located.
