For those who need to apply for or renew their Mexican passport, there is good news: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) maintains a 50% discount on the fee for people aged 60 or older.
This benefit allows older adults to obtain the document at a significantly lower cost, which represents important savings when organizing a trip outside of Mexico. However, one of the most frequent questions is whether the National Institute for Older Adults (INAPAM) card is mandatory to access the discount.
Do older adults get a discount on the Mexican passport?
Yes. The SRE offers a 50% discount on the passport application for adults over 60, as well as for people with disabilities and temporary agricultural workers traveling to Canada.
The benefit applies both to those applying for a passport for the first time and to those needing to renew it, provided they meet the requirements established by the agency.
Is the INAPAM card required?
Not necessarily. Although the INAPAM card can be used as an official identification to prove the applicant's age, the discount is not granted because of being affiliated with the institute.
In reality, the benefit belongs to all people aged 60 or older. Therefore, it is also possible to prove age with other valid official documents, such as an INE voter card or other IDs accepted by the SRE.
Passport costs for older adults in 2026
Thanks to the 50% discount, older adults pay the following amounts:
1-year passport: 460 pesos.
3-year passport: 900 pesos.
6-year passport: 1,220 pesos.
10-year passport: 2,140 pesos.
For those who travel regularly, the six or ten-year validity periods are usually a more convenient and economical option in the long term.
Requirements to apply for a passport
Applicants must present the following documentation on the day of their appointment:
Document proving Mexican nationality
You may present one of the following documents:
- Acta de nacimiento mexicana.
- Certificado de nacionalidad mexicana.
- Declaratoria de nacionalidad mexicana por nacimiento.
- Carta de naturalización.
- Cédula de identidad ciudadana.
- Certificado de matrícula consular.
Valid official identification
Accepted identifications include:
- Credencial para votar (INE).
- Credencial del INAPAM vigente.
- Matrícula consular.
- Licencia de conducir.
- Otras identificaciones reconocidas por la SRE.
Proof of payment
It is essential to present the original receipt stamped by the bank where the corresponding payment was made.

The document is generated when the appointment is scheduled and must be brought printed out.
What happens on the day of the appointment?
It is recommended to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. During the appointment, SRE staff will review documents and capture biometric data.
The process includes:

- Lectura del iris.
Applicants do not need to bring printed photographs, as all images are taken directly at the office. Once the procedure is complete, the passport is usually delivered the same day, after a waiting period that can vary between a few minutes and approximately an hour.
