If you applied for a US tourist visa and received a card the size of a bank ID, you surely noticed that the letters BCC appear on it. Although many people know it as a laser visa, few know what these initials mean and what benefits they offer when traveling to the United States.
The letters BCC stand for Border Crossing Card. This document is issued exclusively to Mexican citizens and combines two functions: it serves as a permit to cross the land border between Mexico and the United States and also functions as a tourist visa for certain trips to the neighboring country.
The card includes the holder's personal data and features advanced security technology that allows U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to verify the traveler's identity and citizenship more efficiently. Like a traditional visa stamped in a passport, the BCC shows its expiration date on the front and generally has a validity of up to 10 years.

Who can obtain the laser visa or Border Crossing Card?
According to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, the laser visa can only be granted to Mexican citizens who complete their application using a valid Mexican passport. The application must be made at one of the U.S. consulates in Mexico or the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
Currently, the application fee for the BCC tourist visa is 185 dollars. Once approved, it allows you to enter the United States for temporary purposes and stay in the country for up to six months for each entry, or for the period authorized by the immigration officer at the time of entry.
What is the BCC visa for?
The Border Crossing Card is intended for activities permitted under the tourism and business category. Therefore, it can be used to visit tourist destinations, go shopping, attend family reunions, or visit friends in the United States.
It also allows for certain business activities, such as attending conventions, conferences, business meetings, negotiating contracts, or attending to property matters. Likewise, it can be used to receive medical treatment on U.S. soil.
However, it is important to remember that the BCC visa does not authorize working or studying in the United States. Performing unauthorized activities could lead to immigration problems and even affect future visa applications.
The advantage of crossing by land with a laser visa
One of the main benefits of the Border Crossing Card is that it allows entering the United States through land border ports without the need to present a Mexican passport, provided that the trip is for a limited period and within a specific zone near the border.
U.S. authorities indicate that entry is permitted up to 25 miles within Texas and California, 55 miles in New Mexico, and 75 miles in Arizona, for a maximum of 30 days. To take advantage of this, simply present the BCC card at the time of crossing.
If the traveler plans to go beyond those zones or stay longer, they must also carry their Mexican passport and request the corresponding I-94 permit when crossing the border.
Can you travel by plane with a BCC visa?
Yes. The laser visa can also be used to enter the United States by air. However, in this case, there is an essential requirement: present a valid Mexican passport along with the BCC.
When the card is presented together with the passport, the BCC functions as a traditional B-category visa, allowing entry to any part of U.S. territory and by any authorized means of transport.
For this reason, the laser visa is considered one of the most practical documents for Mexicans who travel frequently to the United States, as it offers flexibility for both land crossings near the border and air travel to any destination within the country.
