Older adults who receive the Bienestar Pension and plan to move to the United States wonder if, once they establish their residence in the American Union, they can continue collecting the financial support from the federal government. Is this possible? We share what the authorities say and what you can do about it.
Once you turn 65, you have the right to be a beneficiary of one of the most popular social programs in the country: the Bienestar Pension delivers a bimonthly payment of 6,400 pesos to enrolled older adults.
In order to be registered, the adult must meet a series of requirements and present the documentation, and they must also attend in person to carry out the procedure (or an auxiliary person can carry out the process).
The same applies to all those Mexicans who receive the Pension for Persons with Disabilities (3,300 pesos bimonthly), the Bienestar Women's Pension (3,100 pesos bimonthly), or the Support for Working Mothers (1,650 pesos bimonthly): they must meet the eligibility criteria to be beneficiaries.
But, what happens when the beneficiary changes their residence and decides to go live in the United States? The authorities pointed out what happens in this case once they leave Mexico.
Can I continue collecting the Bienestar Pension if I move to the United States?
No, because the rules state that the program does not register people who reside abroad and that beneficiaries must have a current address in Mexico.
The Operating Rules include removal due to residence abroad. This measure is applied when the beneficiary changes their address and starts residing outside of Mexico, which means they stop meeting the eligibility criteria.
Therefore, for example, an older adult who receives the 6,400 pesos bimonthly and decides to relocate their residence permanently to the United States is not guaranteed the continuity of that support.
Do they take away the Bienestar Pension if you only visit the United States?
It is important to clarify that the rules contemplate removal when there is a change of address that corresponds to a residence abroad. But, if an older adult travels to visit their relatives for a few weeks and maintains their residence in Mexico, their situation does not imply the withdrawal of the Bienestar Pension.
What should you do before moving to the United States if you receive the Bienestar Pension?
If you are planning to change your residence, the best thing to do is consult with the Secretariat of Bienestar before moving.
Can I receive the Bienestar Pension again if I return to Mexico?
Returning to Mexico does not guarantee an automatic reactivation after removal. It is necessary to consult with Bienestar regarding the procedure applicable to your situation.
Where can I consult the official rules of the 2026 Bienestar Pension?
The document is available in the Official Gazette of the Federation.
