If you are Mexican, live in the United States, and want to process your pension from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) or from the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), or if you are planning to move to the American Union and want to know if you will be able to continue collecting said benefit, read the following information that will help you understand your options for continuing to receive the payment.
Hundreds of older Mexican adults living in the United States have concerns about whether they can receive a pension from Mexico even if they are not living in the country.
Most believe this is not possible, especially because their reference point is the Bienestar Pension, which does not grant financial support to people who are abroad.
Can I collect my IMSS pension if I live in the United States?
Yes, you can. The IMSS states on its official portal that it has agreements and conventions with Spain, Canada, the United States, Italy, and Argentina to establish guidelines for the transfer of pensions abroad.
However, the Institute specifies that this transfer modality applies to pensions granted under the Social Security Law in force until June 30, 1997, as well as to certain pensions for partial permanent disability or invalidity, of a provisional or temporary nature, granted under the current law.
Can I collect my ISSSTE pension if I live in the United States?
Yes, the ISSSTE provides for the care of pensioners residing abroad and allows them to carry out procedures related to their pension, including updating data and modifying the payment location.
In May 2026, the Institute reminded that keeping personal and banking information updated is important to avoid administrative setbacks and possible delays in pension payments.
"Pensioners who reside outside the country must keep their information updated to avoid possible disruptions in the payment of their pension. To do this, they must go to the nearest Consulate or Embassy of Mexico to their place of residence, where they can present the necessary documentation to follow up on their request," the authorities indicated.
Can I lose my Mexican pension by moving to the United States?
Changing your residence to the United States does not, in and of itself, mean that IMSS or ISSSTE pensions are automatically canceled. The institutions provide procedures for pensioners living abroad.
However, it is important to distinguish between maintaining the right to a pension and meeting the administrative requirements to receive the deposit. Failing to update your address, not responding to a request, or leaving a proof-of-life requirement pending can cause administrative problems or delays.
Before you move, inform the corresponding institute and request written instructions regarding the continuity of payments, the bank account, and the procedures you must carry out from abroad.
How can I receive the pension deposit into a United States bank account?
The procedure depends on the institution paying the pension and the conditions applicable to the benefit.
