Thousands of Mexicans who emigrated to the United States maintain the dream of buying a house in Mexico, whether to return in the future or to build wealth for their families. Although working outside the country can interrupt employer contributions to the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit), there is an alternative to continue saving. Here we tell you what it is, how you can pay for a property if you are abroad, and also how you can continue making contributions to your account.

Have you heard about the Independent Workers (PTI) scheme of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS)? It allows Mexicans working abroad to voluntarily join the social security system and, in this way, make contributions to Infonavit.

Can I continue contributing to Infonavit if I work in the United States?

Yes, Mexicans living and working in the United States can make contributions to Infonavit through the IMSS Independent Workers program.

This mechanism is aimed at those who work for themselves or abroad and do not have an employer registered in Mexico that makes employer contributions on their behalf.

The scheme allows workers to register voluntarily with the IMSS and, during the process, choose to also cover the corresponding contributions to Infonavit.

How do you register with the IMSS from the United States to contribute to Infonavit?

To start saving in Infonavit from the United States, you must first join the IMSS Independent Workers program. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Ingresa al portal oficial del IMSS: www.imss.gob.mx/personas-trabajadoras-independientes

Once you complete the procedure, you will be able to start generating contributions to your Housing Subaccount.

Can I use my Infonavit savings to buy a house in Mexico?

Yes, because the money accumulated in the Housing Subaccount can help you build wealth in Mexico.

What happens if I already have an Infonavit loan and I live in the United States?

If you already bought a house in Mexico through an Infonavit loan and you emigrated to the United States, you can also continue paying your mortgage from abroad.

For this, there is the Infonavit Sin Fronteras program, which allows you to make payments on your own loan or even help a family member or another person cover their financing.

Payments can be made through remittance companies with agreements, including Dolex and Barri Financial Group.

To carry this out, you need to provide the 10-digit Infonavit loan number and request your transaction receipt.

This program is different from housing savings contributions: Infonavit Sin Fronteras is used to pay an existing loan, while the PTI scheme allows you to generate new contributions to the Housing Subaccount.
