After several sector executives called for slowing the progress of artificial intelligence (AI) due to the dangers it could pose to humanity, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and American entrepreneur, warned about the consequences this technology could have if not regulated.
In an interview with NBC News, Gates considered that AI is powerful enough to cause events that could result in the death of one billion people.
“AI is, without a doubt, powerful enough to cause events that, you know, cause a billion deaths.”
Furthermore, he asserted that the combination of people with malicious intentions and the use of the most advanced AI tools could become a very powerful weapon.
“You know, even if it's quite difficult to get to 100%, there has never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with bad intentions using the most advanced AI tools.”
Gates added that AI self-regulation is not enough and pointed out the necessity of passing a law in Washington to regulate this technology.
“No one believes that self-regulation is enough... It is necessary for authorities and politicians to participate in the debate on what security measures and monitoring should look like.”
The American entrepreneur added that, although these measures would entail an additional expense for the industry, it would be small and would not imply a drastic slowdown of their activities.
“And that has to be mandatory. It will mean a small additional expense for the industry, but it will not mean a drastic slowdown in their activities.”

Days earlier, Gates had called for slowing down the progress of AI, as he asserted that we were not prepared for such a "dramatic" change.
Additionally, he stated that there were already cases where AI algorithms suddenly learned to “take shortcuts and cheat” to meet their goals.
