The execution of the man sentenced to death for the 2009 military base massacre will be broadcast live, a Pentagon official said on Thursday.

It will be the first execution by firing squad carried out by the United States armed forces since 1961.

The execution of Nidal Hasan "will be broadcast live. More details will be provided," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

Earlier, United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had declared that the execution would be "public."

"He will be executed by a firing squad, as it should be, and we will ensure that people can witness it, that it is public," Hegseth told right-wing influencer and activist Jack Posobiec, in a video shared on X by several official Pentagon accounts.

Hasan, a psychiatrist in the United States Army, murdered 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009.

Twelve of the dead and 30 of the wounded were soldiers. Hasan was shot by a civilian police officer and was left partially paralyzed.
