The President of the United States, Donald Trump, joked again this Wednesday about the possibility of running in the 2028 presidential election, a nod he frequently repeats even though the Constitution prevents him from seeking a third term.
"I am here to announce my candidacy... Just kidding," he said at the start of a rally at a high school in the state of Georgia, sparking an ovation from the crowd.
Trump, 80, cannot run in the 2028 election, as the Constitution only allows for two terms, and the Republican is currently in his second term after also having served from 2017 to 2021.
The president often jokes about the possibility of running again and frequently states that many supporters of the MAGA ("Make America Great Again") movement, which he leads, ask him to remain in office beyond 2029.
But he has also mentioned on several occasions that he could be succeeded by US Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both of whom are well-positioned in polls for a future Republican presidential candidacy.
