intensified on Friday morning to a category 2 storm on its way toward the Mexican Pacific coast, with forecasts suggesting it will continue to gain strength off the states of Colima and Jalisco, potentially affecting the tourist hub of Puerto Vallarta.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to reach nearly 155 km/h (100 mph), and Simon is expected to become a major hurricane by Friday night and continue intensifying through Saturday, reported the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.

The hurricane was located about 335 km (210 miles) south of Manzanillo and 500 km (310 miles) south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes, moving toward the northwest at a slightly slower pace of 6 km/h (3 mph).

Since Thursday, it has already caused heavy rains and flooding in the state of Guerrero, where classes and non-essential activities were suspended in various parts of the coast and the center of the state.

The flooding mainly affected the port of Acapulco, where some streets turned into rivers, with vehicles swept away by the current and homes and businesses flooded, though no casualties were reported, said Governor Evelyn Salgado.
