A shooting targeting a group of people gathered at a soccer match in the state of Guanajuato (central Mexico) left at least 11 dead and 12 injured, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 5:30 PM local time (23:30 GMT) in the community of Loma de Flores in the municipality of Salamanca, Guanajuato state, in central-western Mexico.
¿QUIÉN GOBIERNA SALAMANCA?
Salamanca Mayor César Prieto confirmed in a public statement that 11 people died—10 at the scene and one more in the hospital—and another 12 were injured, including a woman and a minor.
Prieto detailed that the shooting took place at the end of a sports match on a soccer field, "where people were socializing and an armed commando arrived and attacked them."
"This event adds to a wave of violence that we are unfortunately suffering in the state and particularly in Salamanca," the mayor warned, while calling on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Guanajuato Governor Libia García for support to "restore peace, tranquility, and security" in the municipality.
Five people were murdered on Saturday in the community of Cuatro de Altamira, one more in San Vicente de Flores, and last week there was an explosive device threat outside the facilities of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) in Salamanca, which was deactivated with the intervention of the federal government, Prieto recounted.
The mayor highlighted that Salamanca is a city that "has given a lot to the country," as it houses a Pemex refinery and is a "leverage for development."
In that sense, he lamented the existence of criminal groups that seek to "subjugate the authority," which, he warned, "they will not achieve."
For its part, the Guanajuato Prosecutor's Office reported the initiation of investigations into the events and specified that 6 of the 12 injured remain under medical care.
Furthermore, the agency "energetically" repudiated the attack, while expressing its solidarity with the families of the victims.
Some accounts suggest that the death toll has already reached more than 17, according to local media reports citing testimonies from family members, which has not been confirmed by authorities.
Ataques armados en canchas de fútbol de Salamanca: una violencia que se repite
This is not the first armed attack during a soccer match in Salamanca. In April 2025, an armed commando stormed a field in the community of Cárdenas and murdered four people, and a month earlier, three died following a shooting at a soccer field in Zapote Negro.
Furthermore, this is one of the most serious massacres in recent years in Guanajuato, following the one that occurred in June 2025 in the municipality of Irapuato, where 12 people died and 20 were injured after a shooting at a patron saint festival for the day of Saint John the Baptist.
Guanajuato was the state with the most homicides in Mexico in 2025, with more than 2,500 cases recorded, according to government data.
