A video of an argument between a young woman and a Hispanic woman went viral after the former threatened to call ICE to have her detained. “You don’t speak English, you’re here illegally,” said the girl, who mocked her repeatedly, which sparked outrage among internet users.
In the video, which quickly went viral on social media, a young woman is seen confronting a Hispanic woman in a parking lot; according to what was reported by N+ UNIVISION, the incident occurred in a parking lot located in Melrose Park, Illinois, United States.
The reason for the argument was allegedly because the Hispanic woman's vehicle broke down, which prevented the young woman's car from leaving the site. This situation caused the annoyance of the girl (whom social media identified as Josceline Amaya), who was accompanied by a friend.
Since the car was blocking them from leaving, the young woman began to threaten the owner of the other car and to say that she would call ICE, because she assumed that she was in the United States illegally given that she spoke Spanish. “I’m going to call ICE,” she said.
“The problem is that you are here illegally,” she added, to which the victim replied: "Am I illegal? And are you sure that I am illegal? (...) How do you know?". The young woman's response was: “Do you speak English? No, right? You can’t speak English, right?”, she said.
“I don’t need to speak English to you if I don’t want to,” the Hispanic woman replied. “I’m going to call ICE,” the girl threatened as she looked for the police number on her phone. Faced with this action, the Latina claimed she was not afraid and mentioned that she would wait for the authorities to arrive.
The video sparked divided opinions among internet users, although a large part of the users lamented that speaking Spanish is used as an argument to call ICE. Likewise, they pointed out that the language a person speaks does not in itself determine their immigration status.
