Katie Zacharia made her debut this Tuesday as the new White House spokesperson with her first press conference since US President Donald Trump appointed her to replace Karoline Leavitt, who left the position in August to spend more time with her family.
Zacharia surprised everyone with an unusually brief appearance, lasting 14 minutes and only taking three questions, but in which she broke news: the dismissal of the US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, who has been embroiled in several scandals.
"I feel very honored to work for President Trump and the American people as the new White House Press Secretary. I want to thank President Trump for the trust he has placed in me. I had wanted to work for him for a long time," were her first words from the podium.
The spokesperson appeared visibly nervous and resorted to her notes on several occasions, in contrast to the confidence and agility of her predecessor.
A lawyer by training and mother of four, Zacharia was, until her appointment, a communications advisor for Trump Media, the parent company of Truth Social, the social network founded by the Republican after Twitter suspended his account following the attack on the Capitol in 2021.
She also worked briefly as a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security during Kristi Noem's tenure and has been a commentator on conservative media outlets such as Fox News and Newsmax.
On her first day, she already received criticism because she could not clarify, when asked by the press, where she passed the bar exam to practice as a lawyer.
She is married to film producer Tyler Zacharia, who has worked on films such as 'Silence' and 'The Irishman', both directed by Martin Scorsese.
During the press conference, nerves got the better of her: she referred to her husband as "my president," a slip of the tongue that she later laughed about.
"I thought she did excellently; she did very well," Trump stated this Tuesday when asked about Zacharia's performance.
