U.S. President Donald Trump, proposed this Wednesday to rename the Strait of Hormuz to the "Trump Strait," at a time when this maritime passage is at the center of the Middle East conflict.
Iran blocked the waterway, which is crucial for global oil transit, following attacks by the United States and Israel on February 28, which triggered the war.
"Now that we have it under United States control, could we rename the Strait of Hormuz the TRUMP STRAIT??? Like the United States itself, it will be 'sexier' than ever," the president wrote on his Truth Social account.
A week ago, Trump ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario to "Lake America," amidst the trade war with Canada over the imposition of tariffs.
The president had also done the same with the Gulf of Mexico, which he now calls the "Gulf of America," just after assuming his second term in January 2025.
Neither Mexico nor Canada have accepted the changes.
In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly insisted on his threat to claim sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
He even published a map showing the waterway as a "new U.S. territory."
Oil prices have risen again after the United States launched new attacks near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, in response, according to Trump, to new attempts by Iran to lay mines.
