Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated this Monday that Mexican territory "is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country," after US President posted an image featuring a map in which Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and some Caribbean islands appear covered in the colors of the US flag.

"In the month of the nation, we reaffirm that Mexico is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country," the president wrote on the social network X during the month of September, the date on which the country's Independence is celebrated.

Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico is a "free, independent and sovereign country" in the face of the recent provocations by Trump, who posted said map on his Truth Social network, where he labels the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" and overlays the red and white stripes of the American flag onto Mexican territory.

This comes hours after the US president suggested that the state of New Mexico should be called "New America." What do you think?

The suggestion was made based on the posting of a photograph of the state's perimeter with the new name and with the word "Mexico" crossed out in red and replaced by "America."

The image, also shared by the White House on X, was released just days after Trump signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario, which borders the US and Canada, to "Lake America."

Last week, the US president also lashed out at Mexico, claiming that the country has nothing to offer the United States other than while warning that he would not interrupt the trade relationship with his Mexican counterpart, Sheinbaum.

In 2025, Trump used an executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and recently suggested that the Strait of Hormuz, in the Middle East, through which 20% of the world's oil passes, should be renamed the "Trump Strait." EFE
