Stanford University is facing criticism from the student body for allegedly violating its own policies on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by using this technology to alter a photograph of three students, modifying the appearance of two of them and removing the image of a Hispanic student.
The altered photograph was used on a promotional poster for Stanford Residential & Dining Enterprises at the institution located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the global center for high technology and innovation in Northern California.
The story came to light thanks to a publication by the student newspaper The Stanford Review, which interviewed Billy Ramirez, the student who was erased from the photo to be replaced by the image of an African American student generated with AI.
Although Ramirez told the newspaper that he initially found it funny, he later felt annoyed that the university would make decisions about how students are represented.
"Seeing that my identity was altered and being left out of the image made me feel, in a way, silenced and erased from a representation that was supposed to include me," added the student, who will graduate next year, to the newspaper.
AI was also used to modify the features of the two students with Ramirez who were not removed from the photo.
Following the criticism, Stanford acknowledged that the modifications and the lack of disclosure regarding them violated the university's own AI policy.
"We have reviewed the matter and confirmed that AI was used to modify the image, violating university policy. The posters displaying the image in question have been removed," the university institution said in a statement cited by ABC.
