American actress Christina Applegate revealed this Tuesday that she received a misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis, five years after announcing that she suffered from the autoimmune disease.

Applegate, star of "Married... with Children" and "Dead to Me," said in an episode of her podcast "MeSsy" that after some new tests, her doctor informed her that she never had multiple sclerosis, contrary to what was previously believed.

"It's hard to say, but she came into my room and said, 'Congratulations, you don't have multiple sclerosis,'" recounted Applegate, who hosts the program about the disease alongside fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler ("The Sopranos").

"I didn't feel happy at all. Everyone else was so happy," she remarked.

The actress explained that the information caused her uncertainty, given that she suffers from debilitating symptoms.

"You don't get a misdiagnosis and suddenly you're better (...) In fact, I got worse," she commented.

"I'm back to square one, I don't know what's wrong with me. And that will require my doctors to investigate to understand what has happened since 2021, and why this happened," she added.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, incurable disease that affects the central nervous system and damages the myelin that covers nerve fibers.

It can cause numbness, weakness, difficulty walking, and vision disturbances, among other symptoms.

Given that there is no single medical test to determine if a person has the disease, misdiagnoses are "fairly common," said Dr. Marwa Kaisey of the Cedars-Sinai medical center on the podcast.

Sigler, Applegate's co-host, was diagnosed with the disease 25 years ago, while she was still filming the series "The Sopranos."
