American TikTok content creator Sydney Towle has passed away at the age of 26 after documenting her life with cholangiocarcinoma, a type of cancer that affects the bile ducts, her family reported this Thursday through her social media.
Towle was diagnosed at 23 with this rare and aggressive cancer after going to an emergency room due to the presence of a mass and a burning sensation in her abdomen, and she transformed her experience as an oncology patient into content for social media.
The young woman shared her treatment firsthand, showing herself in the hospital while receiving chemotherapy, but also her excitement for typical twenty-something activities, like traveling or going shopping, and her reflections on the unfairness of being sick.
According to People magazine, last May her medical team recommended that she stop treatment, which included her participation in a clinical trial, and move to palliative care because the cancer had spread, but she decided to switch specialists.
During those moments, Towle made one of her last public appearances by traveling to Miami, where she modeled for a swimwear brand for cancer patients at Swim Week, where she considered it a challenge to go out and expose her surgical scars.
The New York Times notes that the young woman faced online harassment from people who questioned whether she was actually sick, and in a May 2025 interview, she said she felt "pity that they are so angry that living with cancer can look different than what they believe."
On social media, her family posted a photo today of the young woman smiling at the top of a mountain at sunset and described her as "an infinite ray of sunshine," as well as a "daughter, sister, and friend to many," for whom they wished eternal rest following her passing yesterday, Wednesday.
Thousands of followers left messages of condolence today, and many others referred to her as a friend, highlighting her optimism and remembering her as an "inspiration" for sharing her experience with the world.
