Miley Cyrus has reignited controversy after recalling one of the most difficult moments of her career: her performance in Mexico during Corona Capital 2022, which she experienced as a nightmare. What did the singer say?
According to what she recounted in a recent interview, she lived through a concert marked by a huge emotional burden that turned out to be part of a “cocktail of chaos.” Almost four years after headlining the festival's lineup, Miley explained that what happened in Mexico City was not simply an anxiety attack: it coincided with the death of her friend Taylor Hawkins, a terrifying incident during a flight, and a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. “Everything I was really scared of was happening in reality,” she confessed.
The revelations that are causing controversy among her Mexican fans occurred during an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, while Miley promotes her most recent work Bass Persuades, her tenth studio album.
The celebrity recalled that returning to big stages after the pandemic lockdown was an emotional shock, as she went from living practically isolated from people and the outside world to finding herself in front of a gigantic crowd, something that ended up overflowing the emotions she was already carrying.
Miley recalled the scale of that crowd in Mexico City. According to her story, she came to think she was in front of 250,000 people and claimed she has an aerial shot where the stage was practically indistinguishable; however, it is estimated that she performed to an audience of nearly 85,000 people.
“I was playing in Mexico after COVID-19 and I had gone from being confined, seeing a handful of people a day or week, to being shot out of that cannon into what I think was a crowd of about 250,000 people. I have an aerial shot where you can't even tell where the stage is (...) It wasn't so much an anxiety attack, it was an accumulation of a cocktail of chaos,” said the celebrity.
The singer said she was distraught over the recent death of Taylor Hawkins, drummer for the Foo Fighters and one of her closest friends.
In March 2022, the musicians were going to meet in Paraguay, but Hawkins died hours earlier. In addition to this, Miley had had a terrifying experience on her way to the South American country.
As she recalled, her plane was struck by lightning mid-flight, which caused a fire. In the midst of the panic, Cyrus called Taylor to calm herself down; apparently, the drummer encouraged her and told her that her performances at the Asuncionico festival in Paraguay would be incredible. Both figures never saw each other again as Taylor died the next day.
The crowd in front of her, her COVID infection, as well as the plane incident and the death of her friend were factors that made her explode in an anxiety attack the day of her performance at Corona Capital. As she recalled, while performing Fly on the Wall, she began to reflect on her life, her fragility, and that “all the things I was afraid of were happening.”
Miley had a one-and-a-half-hour performance scheduled at the festival; however, she shortened her setlist to adjust to just over an hour, leaving her Mexican fans without understanding what was happening.
From the stage, the singer asked the audience if they had ever experienced similar feelings without knowing exactly why. Despite those fears, the presence of her followers became a support for the artist. Cyrus assured them that if her music had ever helped them, they could face those difficult moments together.
It is worth remembering that it was during that edition, during Miley Cyrus's set, that a lice outbreak was reported among the attendees. As fans recounted on social media, they began to feel itching on their heads due to lice just after the singer's concert.
Her statements to Zane Lowe sparked conversation again among social media users, especially after the singer subsequently expressed her gratitude for “the love of Mexico.” Some internet users questioned that Cyrus would remember that experience negatively despite the large number of people who came to see her.
