The National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) of Mexico announced this Tuesday the launch of the 'Habla Mundial' (Speak World) English training program, aimed at workers in the hospitality sector with an eye on this year's World Cup.
During the presentation of the initiative, organized by the National Center for Higher Education Assessment (Ceneval), it was explained that all hospitality workers will be able to participate in this training course to certify their English language skills, and thus "be prepared" for a World Cup event where nearly five million tourists are expected to visit Mexico.
"I am sure that this will do a lot of good for the restaurant industry. We must always be prepared so that tourists leave with a good impression, so that they see that in Mexico we are on par with any country in the world and that we can communicate very easily with all tourism," highlighted the president of Canirac, Ignacio Alarcón.
In this sense, he highlighted the hospitality industry as one of the country's "great economic engines" thanks to the 2.8 million direct jobs it generates, which is why the 'Habla Mundial' program is a way to be "100% prepared" to serve all visitors, the "majority" of whom are English speakers.
The plan, designed by the platform Platzi and which will conclude with an online assessment to certify the level of English acquired, is aimed at improving restaurant service for foreign customers, focusing on real situations that hospitality workers may face.
Regardless of their English level, all workers can participate to improve their skills, as can the hospitality establishments themselves, which will be recognized with a badge.
According to the general director of Ceneval, Carmen Enedina, this linguistic preparation will allow Mexican talent "to be recognized worldwide."
According to their calculations, only 10% of the five million people in this industry have officially certified knowledge of English, which in their view highlights the relevance of the training program ahead of the World Cup.
Furthermore, the promoters stated that a better level allows workers to be better prepared and have a higher probability of achieving better compensation in their respective roles.
The World Cup event, which is held every four years, will begin next June in the three host countries planned for this edition: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The opening match will be on June 11 at the Estadio Azteca in the Mexican capital.
