Edson Álvarez, a World Cup player for the Mexican national team, issued a statement on Thursday in which he denies the accusations involving him in a kidnapping of producer Juan José López Ordóñez.
"I categorically reject any accusation or attempt to link my name to events, conflicts, or conduct that are completely foreign to me. Over the last few months, my name and my image have been used repeatedly to generate greater media reach around a situation that does not involve me," the midfielder stated through his social media channels.
The name of Álvarez, who has served as captain of the Mexican national team, was involved in recent days in an alleged kidnapping case of Juan José López Ordóñez, according to a publication about the Mexican entertainment industry.
In the publication, López Ordóñez claimed to have filmed a documentary about the footballer's career at a cost of 3.5 million pesos (a little over $200,000), a business deal he made with Álvarez's ex-wife and her ex-father-in-law, Jonathan Toache.
In López's version, it is mentioned that when attempting to collect payment for said work, the footballer was aware that he had been kept kidnapped for a day, during which the Touche family employed two people to intimidate him, although he offered no further details about the event.
This Thursday, Edson Álvarez published a statement in which he invites those involved, if what is mentioned is true, to prove it before the appropriate authorities.
"If anyone considers that they have elements to prove any improper conduct on my part, there are authorities, prosecutors, and courts to present them, not through statements in media whose content prioritizes morbid interest and media exposure over rigor and the truth," emphasized the former English West Ham player.
The defender assured that, given the situation, he has asked his lawyers to take measures to end the case.
"Given the gravity of the statements that have been made, I have asked my legal team to evaluate and take the appropriate actions against anyone who makes or spreads false allegations against me," he concluded.
In his most recent participation with the Mexican national team at the last World Cup, Álvarez played in four matches.
