Argentine Rodrigo de Paul exploded against European football legend Robert Lewandowski during the match between Chicago Fire and Inter Miami. What happened in the match? Why did they fight? Here are all the details.
The match between both American MLS giants was embroiled in controversy after the Argentine confronted the Pole and they exchanged words after Robert Lewandowski had a run-in with Ian Fray, one of the Inter defenders.
Both Lewandowski and Fray pushed each other, both falling to the ground; when Ian tried to argue with the Pole, De Paul intervened, escalating the conflict. Between shoves and words, De Paul rubbed his two Copa América titles with the Argentine national team and his triumph in the Qatar World Cup in Lewandowski's face.
Videos that have already gone viral on social media, which have been reviewed by experts and fans of both teams, show the moment of the confrontation between both football celebrities and exactly what De Paul says to the Pole.

“Who are you, you idiot? I’ve won two Copa América titles and one World Cup, what about you?” he allegedly threw in Lewandowski's face amid his tirade and several shoves that heated up the environment.
Amid the shoving, teammates of both figures and the coaching staffs of Chicago Fire and Inter intervened to calm things down.
While Rodrigo de Paul kept fighting, Robert just smiled and continued playing the final minutes of the match. After the images and the Argentine's words went viral, users accused him of belittling the Polish player's career.
Comments like the following are circulating on the internet defending the European footballer: “De Paul, I remind you that Arbeloa also won a World Cup… yet, we will all remember Lewandowski as one of the best 9s of all time, and many won't even recognize you in a photo,” “He's Argentine, nothing more to say,” “No merit, gifts from FIFA and CONMEBOL,” “The question here is, who is De Paul besides being Messi's friend?”, “Lewandowski is one of the best forwards in history, the other is Messi's friend,” “While he attacks Lewandowski, De Paul is only known for being Messi's shadow and Tini's partner; take that away and nobody knows who he is or what he has done.”
This is not the first time both footballers have had run-ins on the pitch. Their bad relationship dates back to when the Argentine was at Atlético de Madrid (2021-2025) and Robert at Barcelona (2022-2026). Likewise, both had a confrontation during the group stage in the Qatar World Cup.
During the 2025 MLS playoffs, De Paul also caused controversy after arguing with Nashville player Sam Surridge. In the middle of a heated fight, the Argentine also minimized Surridge's career and mocked him by suggesting that his last name was not that relevant.
