is now a Manchester City player: the Argentine arrived from Chelsea for £125 million (around $169 million) in a deal that was labeled the most expensive signing in Premier League history. However, in England, doubts have already begun: is he really worth that amount?

The transfer was finalized on September 1st, during the final day of the transfer window. Fernández signed a six-season contract and will have an option to extend his deal for an additional year until 2033.

The signing figure drew particular attention due to the price Manchester City agreed to pay Chelsea. And although the Argentine midfielder has talent, some British media outlets believe the club took a significant risk by shelling out such a high amount.

Because of the amount paid by City (the team where Erling Haaland also plays), Fernández became one of the most expensive footballers in history (even more expensive than Cristiano Ronaldo) and, additionally, the first player to be involved in two transfers exceeding £100 million; Chelsea had paid around £106.7 million to Benfica for him in January 2023.

One of the harshest analyses appeared in The Independent, where journalist Richard Jolly described the signing as an operation that presents tactical and financial problems for Manchester City.

The analysis focused on different aspects of the footballer, including his temperament, discipline, and some controversial episodes from his time at Chelsea. It also brought up his controversial participation during the 2026 World Cup.

"Argentina's lack of discipline reached its lowest point in the World Cup final when Fernández was sent off for a reckless challenge, his teammates behaved shamefully after the final whistle, and subsequently, the 25-year-old player posted a message on Instagram stating that the Albiceleste had behaved with 'pride' and 'humility'," said Jolly.

What arguments are there in favor of signing Enzo Fernández?

According to sports analysts, Manchester City is not signing an inexperienced footballer, as Fernández is just 25 years old and was already a world champion with Argentina in Qatar 2022 and champion of the 2024 Copa América. He also played in the 2026 World Cup final, in which Argentina lost to Spain.

During his time at Chelsea, he also won the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
