Gilberto Mora, a jewel of Mexican soccer, scored a goal to give the Xolos de Tijuana a 1-0 victory over León, placing the team in the top position of the Apertura tournament.
Mora made his league debut at the start of the second half and, with his presence, the Tijuana side managed by Uruguayan coach Sebastián Abreu improved, securing the victory in the 53rd minute with a well-taken penalty by the 17-year-old.
León had held possession of the ball for most of the first half, but it was Abreu's Xolos who came closest to taking the lead, with a penalty taken by Moroccan Mourad El Ghezouani, which was saved by goalkeeper Óscar García.
After Mora's goal, Tijuana defended their lead well against a scrappy León side that could not capitalize on its opportunities in the opposing box.
The Xolos tallied their second win in two outings and lead the standings with six points and a better goal difference than Cruz Azul, who are in second place and also have a perfect record.
In another match, the Potros de Hierro del Atlante drew 1-1 with América, earning their first point in their return to the First Division after 12 years.
Colombian Cristian Borja gave the "Azulcremas" the lead, but Atlante did not back down; they pushed their lines forward and leveled the score with a goal from Eugenio Pizzuto, his second in two matches.
América dominated the start of the duel, but after being caught, they struggled to recover in the 66th minute against an incisive opponent who played without inhibition against one of the title favorites.
With one win, one draw, and four points, América is third in the standings, while Atlante appears in eleventh place with a draw and a loss in two outings.
The Apertura began last Tuesday with two matches moved forward due to the participation of Cruz Azul and Toluca tomorrow in the Campeón de Campeones title match of Mexican soccer.
The "Azules" came from behind to defeat Puebla 2-1 with goals from Luka Romero and Nigerian Christian Ebere, while Pumas UNAM defeated Toluca 1-2 with goals from Víctor Arteaga and Sebastián Córdova.
The second matchday continues tomorrow when Chivas de Guadalajara hosts Juárez FC, Santos Laguna plays Atlas, and Tigres UANL takes on San Luis.
On Sunday, the Rayados de Monterrey will visit Necaxa and Querétaro will face Pachuca.
