Mexican diver Osmar Olvera had something missing from his trophy collection.

A double Olympic medalist and world champion, Olvera won his first gold medal at a Central American and Caribbean Games on Thursday, crowning himself champion of the 1-meter springboard at the Santo Domingo 2026 event.

“It was the medal I was missing,” said the 22-year-old Olvera.

At the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center Aquatic Center, Olvera dominated the final with a score of 430.85.

The silver medal went to Colombian Luis Uribe, who scored 415.00 points. Mexican Juan Celaya completed the podium with 401.70 points.

Olvera, one of the Mexican flag bearers at these games celebrating their centenary, started with scores of 59.80 and 58.50. He made a strong move with a score of 73.10 in the fourth round and then a 68.80 in the sixth to lead both turns.

“Nothing is easy. Everything has its complexity, you shouldn't take anything for granted,” noted Olvera, who at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games won a silver medal in the 3-meter synchronized springboard alongside Celaya and a bronze in the 3-meter individual springboard.

He was the first Mexican athlete to reach the podium twice in the same Olympic event since race walker Raúl González did so in Los Angeles 1984.

His goal is to leave the Dominican capital with three gold medals, the same harvest he achieved at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

“I have one of the three already and I am happy to start off on the right foot, but I still want more and I can still do better,” indicated Olvera.

Mexico continues with a wide superiority in the Santiago 2026 medal table, reaching a total of 170 medals by sunset on Thursday.

The Mexicans have 74 gold, 54 silver, and 42 bronze medals.

Colombia occupies second place in the table, with a record of 39 golds, 43 silvers, and 26 bronzes for a total of 108.

Cuba (16 golds), Venezuela (12), and the host Dominican Republic (10) complete the top five of the medal count.
