The young British cyclist Finlay Tarling, born in Wales 19 years ago, died this Friday after a serious accident during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal, race officials announced.
"The organizers of the 87th Tour of Portugal bitterly regret having to announce the passing of British rider Finlay Tarling, of the NSN Development Team, after a serious accident suffered in the eighth stage of the race," reads the statement published on the social network X.
The precise circumstances of the accident were not officially detailed, but Portuguese public television (RTP) stated that the young man was hit by a car that was traveling in the opposite direction.
The younger brother of Joshua Tarling, a cyclist for the Netcompany-Ineos team, was quickly treated by medical teams, who could do nothing to save his life, RTP added.
Due to this fatal accident, the race was suspended about 20 kilometers from the finish line and the podium ceremonies were canceled "as a sign of respect and mourning," the organizers specified.
The President of Portugal, Antonio José Seguro, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, and the NSN Development team issued reactions to convey their condolences to the athlete's family and the cycling world.
"Fin was a highly valued member of our team, but above all he was a son, a brother, and a friend to many people. We will miss him very much," wrote NSN in a message on social media.
The NSN Development team is the second team of NSN, a Spanish leisure company co-founded by Spanish football legend Andrés Iniesta in 2018 and which succeeded Israel Premier Tech in the peloton.
