Traveling abroad with a baby requires planning, and one of the most important documents to do so is the Mexican passport. Although many people associate this process with teenagers or adults, the truth is that newborns can also obtain this document from their first days of life, provided they meet the requirements established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).
One of the most common questions is how long a baby's passport lasts and why its validity is different from that of adults.
¿Cuánto dura el pasaporte de un bebé?
The validity of the Mexican passport for minors varies according to their age.
For children under three years of age, including babies and newborns, the SRE offers a 1-year validity period.
In contrast, minors who are over three years old and under 18 may request a passport valid for:
- 3 años.
- 6 años.
This difference responds to specific needs related to the identification of minors.
¿Por qué el pasaporte de un bebé dura menos tiempo?
The main reason is that during the first years of life, physical changes are very rapid. The appearance of a newborn can be very different from what it will be just a few months later, so keeping the photograph and identification data updated facilitates identity verification during international travel.
Furthermore, passports for minors are subject to special protection controls because children and adolescents are under parental authority or guardianship. For this reason, the validity is more limited and the requirements to obtain it are stricter than in the case of adults.
In other words, a baby's passport lasts one year because the goal is for the official identification to reflect their image and current situation more accurately.
¿Un recién nacido puede tener pasaporte?
Yes. There is no minimum age to process a Mexican passport.
A newborn baby can obtain one as soon as they have their birth registration and meet the documentation required by the SRE. The presence of the minor and the authorization of those exercising parental authority or guardianship are mandatory for the procedure.

To manage the document, the family must present:
Printed appointment confirmation.
Original birth certificate of the baby.
CURP of the minor.
CURP of both parents or guardians.
Valid official identification of both parents or whoever exercises parental authority or guardianship.
Authorization from both parents.
Pediatric certification with a photograph of the baby and the doctor's professional license.
Copy of the pediatrician's professional license.
The presence of both parents is usually necessary, except in situations where one person legally has sole parental authority.
¿Hay descuentos en el trámite?
Yes. Babies with a proven disability can access a 50 percent discount on the cost of the passport.
To obtain this benefit, it is necessary to present a valid medical certificate that proves the condition at the time of the procedure.
Cómo agendar una cita
The SRE allows appointments to be requested through three methods:
Por teléfono
Those interested can call 55 893 24827, available every day from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., to select an office, date, and time.
Por internet
The process can be started through the SRE appointment system using a LlaveMx account or an email address.
Por WhatsApp
It is also possible to request an appointment by calling (+52) 55 893 24827, where an automated assistant guides the user through the process.
¿Qué ocurre el día de la cita?
Families must go with all required documentation, the appointment confirmation, and the bank payment receipt.
An advantage of the current procedure is that it is no longer necessary to bring printed photographs, as the minor's image is taken directly at the SRE office. It is recommended to arrive at least 15 minutes before the assigned time to avoid setbacks.
After the document review and the capture of the photograph and biometric data, the passport is usually delivered the same day, generally after a waiting period that can range from 10 to 60 minutes.
If a Mexican baby is going to travel abroad, they will need a valid passport. This document can have a duration of one or three years for children under three years of age, a measure that seeks to keep their identification updated due to the rapid physical changes that occur during childhood. Although the process requires various requirements and the authorization of those who exercise parental authority, the process can be carried out from the first months of the minor's life.
