The National Coordination of Civil Protection (CNPC) remains in coordination with the three levels of government regarding the forecast of heavy to very heavy rains and high temperatures that will affect different regions of Mexico this Friday, August 14.
According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), heavy rains with localized very heavy rainfall, from 50 to 75 millimeters, are expected in 11 states: Chihuahua, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Michoacán, Querétaro, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Guerrero, and Veracruz.
The CNPC warned that the precipitation could be accompanied by electrical discharges, wind gusts, and possible hail, conditions that can cause severe waterlogging, flooding, and the rising of rivers and streams.
Where will it rain the heaviest in Mexico today?
The highest expected accumulations, from 50 to 75 mm, are concentrated in:
- Chihuahua
- Durango
- San Luis Potosí
- Michoacán
- Querétaro
- Hidalgo
- Estado de México
- Tlaxcala
- Puebla
- Guerrero
- Veracruz
Additionally, showers with localized heavy rains, from 25 to 50 mm, are forecast in Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, Mexico City, Morelos, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo.
In Baja California, Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, and Aguascalientes, intervals of showers of 5 to 25 mm are expected.
Risk of flooding and landslides
The CNPC noted that the rains can cause severe waterlogging, flooding, the rising of rivers and streams, and landslides in mountainous areas and slopes.
For this reason, Civil Protection asked the population to stay informed through official channels and follow the instructions of local authorities.
In the event of water accumulation or waterlogging, it recommended not to cross flooded streets or underpasses, whether on foot or in a vehicle.
It also asked to keep drains free of trash to facilitate water flow.
What to do during a storm?
In case of a hailstorm, the recommendation is to stay in a roofed and safe place, away from domes, large windows, and light structures that could collapse.
During an electrical storm, the population should remain indoors, keep doors and windows closed, and unplug electrical appliances when possible.

The forecast combines the rains with hot weather in various regions of the country, so the CNPC recommended staying hydrated and paying special attention to children and older adults.
