After the murder of 21-year-old student Claudia Tacoronte, originally from the Canary Islands, Spain, in Cuautla, Morelos, the rector of the University of Granada, Pedro Mercado, offered the opportunity to return home to the other 27 students who are on exchange in Mexico.
According to Spanish media, Mercado opened the possibility for the rest of the exchange students to return if they wish after the student's murder was reported as an alleged femicide.
Should they accept, the University of Granada will facilitate reversing their enrollments and incorporating them into other study destinations to continue their academic path.
In addition to offering help to the twenty-odd exchange students at different institutions in Mexico, the rector described the crime against Tacoronte as a "brutal act," while the institution expressed its "firmest rejection and absolute condemnation."
For its part, the University of Granada (UGR) condemned the murder of Tacoronte. After learning of the crime, the institution activated its international protocol and established communication with the Consulate and the Embassy of Spain in Mexico to learn more details about what happened.
The university also expressed its support for Claudia's family and assured that it will remain at their disposal to accompany them during the process.
As a sign of respect, the school called for a minute of silence on Monday, September 14th, in memory of Claudia Tacoronte at all of its workplaces in Spain.
"The University of Granada expresses its firmest rejection and absolute condemnation regarding the murder of Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a student of our institution who was carrying out an academic mobility stay at the UAEM, perpetrated in the municipality of Cuautla, Mexico (..) The team at the University of Granada has made itself available to the Spanish consular authorities in Mexico, as well as the young woman's family, to provide all necessary support at this time," the university stated in a press release.
Claudia Tacoronte was an exchange student at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), coming from the University of Granada, Spain. According to reports, she was murdered at the Casa de la Cultura in Cuautla, near the campus where she was carrying out a student mobility stay in the early childhood education program.
Local authorities indicated that the crime would be investigated as a femicide, in accordance with the protocol applied to violent deaths of women in the country after evidence was found that she had been attacked with a bladed weapon.
President Claudia Sheinbaum pointed out during her morning press conference that the Attorney General's Office (FGR) is working with the Morelos Prosecutor's Office to clarify the murder of the Spanish student, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) maintains collaboration with the Spanish consular authorities.
