A new tropical depression formed this Tuesday in the southern Mexican Pacific and could quickly become a hurricane over the next few days, while Simon remains a Category 1 hurricane off the coast of Sinaloa and Nayarit, reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

Tropical Depression Twenty-One-E was located at 09:30 hours (15:30 GMT) 650 kilometers south of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca, and 870 kilometers south-southeast of Acapulco, Guerrero, according to the agency under the National Water Commission (Conagua).

The phenomenon has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gusts of 75 kilometers per hour, and is moving northwest at 17 kilometers per hour.

Meteorological authorities warned that its circulation will reinforce the chances of rain in the south and southeast of the country, while conditions could favor its rapid intensification until it reaches hurricane category.

On the other hand, Simon remains a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 185 kilometers per hour.

Its center was located 165 kilometers west of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 335 kilometers south-southwest of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, moving west at just four kilometers per hour.

The cyclone will cause heavy rains of between 25 and 50 millimeters in the east and south of Nayarit, as well as rainfall between 5 and 25 millimeters in the center and south of Sinaloa.

It will also cause wind gusts of up to 50 kilometers per hour and waves of between 1.5 and 2.5 meters on the coasts of both entities.

The SMN and the United States National Hurricane Center are maintaining a hurricane watch zone from Escuinapa to Bahia Tempehuaya, in Sinaloa, including the Islas Marias, and another for a tropical storm from Cabo Corrientes to Escuinapa.

Authorities expect Simon to remain virtually stationary for the next two days, with no significant coastal effects beyond the waves in Jalisco, Nayarit, and Sinaloa.

However, they warned that rainfall could cause landslides, river overflows, and flooding in low-lying areas, so they asked the population to follow the recommendations of Civil Protection.
