NASA stated this Monday that the extreme damage left by the recent double earthquake in in Caracas and La Guaira was the product of a violent fault rupture that displaced the Earth's surface by up to 60 centimeters.

The US space agency published a series of data this Monday on the seismic movement recorded by the NISAR satellite, which was put into orbit a year ago to map the Earth's surface with millimeter detail.

According to the data collected by NASA, the fault that caused the earthquake fractured from the town of Morón, advanced through the sea, and returned to land near the Caracas international airport.

"This fault is part of a network of fractures located along the boundary between the Caribbean plate to the north and the South American plate to the south," it explained in a statement, noting that the faults accumulated stress "for a long time" before fracturing.

One of the largest ground displacements, up to 60 centimeters, was recorded south of the Caracas airport.

The severity of the double earthquake with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, which struck the country on June 24 and has already left 4,561 dead, led to the activation of the NISAR emergency response system for the first time to map the damage of a major earthquake.

This rapid processing allows data to be provided within 12 to 24 hours to support disaster response efforts.

The number of injured and homeless people from the earthquakes remains at 16,740 and 17,907, respectively, according to the latest balance sheet released on social media by Jorge Rodríguez, president of the Venezuelan Parliament.

Since June 24, there have been 1,254 aftershocks, according to the Government.
