Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo sent a message of support to Andrés Mieles, a Venezuelan boy who was injured in the earthquakes on June 24, and invited him to attend one of his matches once he recovers.
"Hello Andrés, how are you? I'm making this video to send you a hug. I know you're a huge fan. When you get better, I want to invite you to watch one of my matches to enjoy," expressed the captain of the Portugal national team in a video shared on social media.
Andrés's story went viral after he stated, upon being rescued, that one of his wishes was to have the Cristiano Ronaldo sticker from the Panini World Cup album.
"I would love to meet you. A hug, friend," added the player known as CR7.
Venezuelan content creator Armando Poyo, one of the promoters of the campaign to raise awareness about Andrés's story, was the one who personally showed him the video with the Portuguese forward's message at the hospital where he remains admitted.
In another video shared on social media, the boy is seen lying in his hospital bed holding the Cristiano Ronaldo sticker. "Did you see? You didn't believe it," someone tells him, while a nurse comforts him and adds, "Did you see? Here it is," showing him the sticker as Andrés smiles.
The child was seriously injured and lost his family during the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, and had to undergo the amputation of one of his legs. His case has generated a wave of solidarity both inside and outside Venezuela.
According to the latest official report, the death toll from the double earthquake on June 24 rose to 2,645, while the number of injured increased to 12,666.
Ronaldo, captain of Portugal, is currently competing with his national team in the World Cup, in which the Portuguese team qualified for the round of 16 the day before.
