The Estadio Ciudad de México, formerly known as the Estadio Azteca, will be the stage where the Mexican National Team will seek its pass to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup against England. Ahead of the match, English fans and sports analysts have highlighted how difficult it is to face El Tri at this venue, where statistics favor them, as they have suffered only two official home losses in more than six decades.
Here we tell you the impressive numbers of El Tri at the Estadio Ciudad de México, which teams were the only ones to manage a defeat against them, and what other factors could favor Javier Aguirre's team against England.
¿Cuáles son los números de México en el Estadio Azteca?
According to data compiled by Expansión, out of the 88 official matches that El Tri has played at home in the Estadio Ciudad de México, they have won 69. Additionally, they have had 17 draws and only 2 losses.

- 69 partidos se ganaron
- 17 fueron empates
- 2 fueron derrotas
¿Cuáles fueron las únicas derrotas de México en el Estadio Azteca?
Throughout its history, only two national teams have managed to defeat Mexico at home in official matches played at this stadium, with both encounters corresponding to World Cup qualifiers.
Costa Rica 2-1 México (2001)
The first of the so-called "Aztecazos" occurred during the qualifying round for the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, when Costa Rica defeated El Tri with a score of 2-1.
Honduras 2-1 México (2013)
The second defeat came in the Final Hexagonal for the 2014 Brazil World Cup. Honduras surprised the Mexican team with another 2-1 victory.
These are the only two occasions in which the Mexican National Team has lost an official home match at this stadium in more than 60 years.
¿Por qué la altitud podría favorecer a México ante Inglaterra?
One of the topics most discussed in the lead-up to the match is the altitude of Mexico City, located approximately 2,240 meters above sea level.
This condition could represent an advantage for the Mexican team, as the English players are not used to competing at that altitude. In fact, coach Thomas Tuchel previously acknowledged that playing in the country's capital poses a disadvantage for his team.
English journalist Henry Winter recalled via X that when England played a friendly match against Mexico in 1969, the conditions were so demanding for the players that the coaching staff concluded that to properly acclimate for the 1970 World Cup, the team needed to arrive in the country nearly a month earlier.
"They decided that to properly acclimate to the 1970 World Cup finals in Mexico, they would need to arrive nearly a month early."
