With these new designations, the Donald Trump administration officially adds six Mexican cartels to its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
The Juárez Cartel, founded in the 1970s and operating in the border city of Ciudad Juárez in the state of Chihuahua, and Los Viagras, a criminal organization with a presence mainly in the state of Michoacán, were added to these categories for their involvement in drug trafficking and other crimes linked to organized crime, according to the Treasury.
In February of this year, the Trump administration designated six Mexican cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, including the Sinaloa, the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), the Northeast, the Gulf, and La Nueva Familia Michoacana, as part of a strategy to intensify the fight against drug trafficking and the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.

The Mexican government has repeatedly rejected any unilateral action by Washington against cartels on national territory and has defended bilateral security cooperation under the principle of respect for sovereignty, despite increasing pressure from the White House to harden the fight against drug trafficking.
