The FBI is investigating an alleged electronic theft of confidential data belonging to its staff and individuals who applied for jobs at the entity, the agency confirmed to EFE after the cybercriminal group 'ShinyHunters' reported a hack.
"The FBI is aware of a cybercriminal group claiming to have breached the FBIJobs.gov portal and allegedly compromising personally identifiable information (PII) of FBI employees," the agency detailed in a statement.
The agency stated that it has not yet determined "the point of the security breach—whether through a third party or the FBI's own systems—," so the bureau is investigating the matter "actively and exhaustively, and collaborating closely with external providers."
The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters claimed on Tuesday to have stolen "highly confidential" information from "almost all" FBI agents and job applicants in a message addressed to its director, Kash Patel, and the deputy assistant director of the Cyber Division, Brett Leatherman.
In the warning, the hacker group demands that the agency remove an alert published in May by the FBI that denounces ShinyHunters' extortion methods.
"We are willing to give you a one-week deadline to correct or simply remove the second quarter 2026 flash report about us, which includes several false accusations," the cybercriminals' message says, according to local media.
The group claims they do not belong to "The Com," an international network of young cybercriminals, and says it is actively combating disinformation "as firm defenders and supporters of the United States Constitution."
According to the collective, the cyberattack reached the FBI's Criminal Justice (CJ) and Human Resources services, among others.
"The statement we issued today is intended to address and rectify those accusations," the organization warns.
