An agent from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) killed a Mexican migrant during an arrest operation in Houston, Texas, according to a government spokesperson who told EFE that the agent fired in "self-defense."

The deceased was identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen who was in the United States irregularly, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. local time (12:50 GMT), when ICE agents attempted to stop a vehicle as part of an operation aimed at arresting the migrant.

According to the government's account, the man attempted to flee, rammed an official vehicle with his car, and disobeyed several "verbal commands."

The spokesperson also stated that Salgado used his vehicle "as a weapon" and attempted to run over one of the agents, who then fired in "self-defense." The man was later transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The FBI is leading the investigation, the spokesperson noted, and has dispatched agents to the scene.

Authorities have not yet provided further details regarding the number of shots fired, the identity of the agent involved, or whether there is any footage of the incident.

At least six people have died at the hands of immigration agents in the United States, including two U.S. citizens, Alex Pretty and Renée Goodman, during a major operation in Minnesota in January.
