The controversy between Belgium and Donald Trump began days before the Round of 16 match, when the United States president called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the red card US forward Folarin Balogun had received during the match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The expulsion occurred after Balogun's cleats impacted the ankle of defender Tarik Muharemovic, putting his physical integrity at risk.
Following Trump's call, the red card against Balogun was rescinded, allowing the forward to play in the match against Belgium.
Regarding this, Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday: "I asked for a review because I didn't think it was a foul... It seemed to me like two great athletes colliding and getting tangled up."
Infantino noted in a statement also released on Monday that: "During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA's independent judicial bodies and that the case would be resolved in due course by the competent bodies."

When Romelu Lukaku scored the fourth goal of the match, several of his teammates celebrated by imitating Donald Trump's famous dance, moving their arms back and forth.
However, that was not the only occasion they resorted to the peculiar celebration. After the match, the players performed the dance again in the locker room to celebrate their qualification for the quarterfinals.

The post was accompanied by the message "Cancel this," a phrase that numerous users interpreted as a jab related to the controversy involving Donald Trump before the match.
